He is there

a poem by Ramya Iyer

She knows not what it is; she knows not what it means.
But she sees it in those eyes, while lips speak true lies.
She notices him gaze when she is looking away
And when she looks at him, many feelings his face does betray

He laughs and shrugs it off, but wishes he could say,
And she keeps mum, lest she reciprocate!
He gathers his guts and opens his mouth
Lips remain parted and no words emit forth
She knows fully well, but will not encourage.
Because she fears ‘What if this be a mirage?’
They just sit there, letting time fly,
But fears and insecurities come thither, o why, o why?
Does not she understand, he wonders?
He doesn’t realize, on this matter often she ponders.
But she would give anything to maintain their friendship
Rather than living with broken hearts and being lovesick.
Because she is clear, nothing will materialize
To keep mum on this subject would be a decision more wise.
