Vinayaka

a poem by Ramesh Narasimhan

Lord Vinayaka, of rotund frame;
The day is blessed with chant of your name.
Remover of obstacles, Shiva’s blessed son;
By repeating your name, my battle is won.

Vinayaka, with elephant head;
Parvati’s armies you diligently led;
Called fondly ‘Ganesh’ or ‘Ganapathy’ by men;
You’re destroyer of ill omen.

No temple is complete without you;
No plan succeeds sans you;
Liberation is granted to a fortunate few;
Who realise that behind the scene, it is but you;

Wise Vinayaka, help me in realising you;
Vinayaka, cast my life anew;
Vinayaka, bless my every act;
Vinayaka, let us sign a pact;
Vinayaka, watching my every deed;
Of every success, you are the seed.

Shiva’s and Parvati’s holy kin;
Show me the manifold wonders within;
Today, I pledge my life to you;
Today, I move nearer to you;
Grant me everlasting faith in you;
Grant me the requisite wisdom too.

Grant that I understand your might;
Grant me vision, grant me sight.
