Friends Forever

a poem by Preeti Bhargava

I want to be the picture on your table,
looking at which you sing and dance,
the one whose pony tail you pull in glee,
the one with whom you laugh and prance.

I want to be the lark that sings outside your window,
the dew drops that settle on your head,
the brook that flows besides your house,
the ferns you have often fed.

I want to be the pearl that remains close to your heart,
the breeze which ruffles your hair,
the lock of hair which falls on your forehead,
which you caress with gentle care.

I want to be the shine in your eyes,
the radiance of your heart,
the voice of your soul,
the sunny smile you readily impart.

I want to be the book you often read,
the thoughts you often think,
the dreams you often dream,
the songs you often sing.

I want to be the moon you often gaze at,
the clouds you watch sailing by,
the castles that you make,
the wings on which you fly.

What are friends for, if not to bring cheer?
Making you laugh and wiping your tear.
