Without you

a poem by Aparna Ramnath

You gave me life,
Lavished with love,
Helped overcome my fears,
Rejoiced in my joys and
Wept through my tears.
Still continue to give
Without my asking,
Before I realize the want
So that I may never be lacking.
Inspite of all my shortcomings
And my innumerable flaws,
You have let me win
All the unfair wars.
Without You, I will feel lost,
Who else but you can only give
and never expect in return,
Be it in future, now or the past.
I owe you much more than I can
Honestly and willingly accept.

You grew up with me,
Day after day,
Shared in my joys
At work and at play.
Picked a fight with me,
Waged a battle for me,
And through ups and downs
Fearlessly stood by me.
Some may come and go,
Every now and then,
But you are with me,
Wherever you may be.
Without you, I will feel lonely,
Who but you can I share with,
Those precious secrets and troublesome woes,
And all those little things
That nobody else knows!
I need you much more than I can
Plainly and loudly accept.

You entered my life,
So grand, yet so naive,
But seem to have grown into me
Much faster than I can believe.
Most of my thoughts now
Revolve around you,
Your likes, your dislikes,
Mine matter, but a few.
I love the times we share,
And our incessant talk,
As for all those petty tiffs
They are but momentary flicks.
Without you, I will feel incomplete,
Who but you can be my better half,
Through sickness and health
And through life’s long course.
I am with you much more than I care to
Openly and unreservedly accept.
