It took only one thing from you

a poem by Mary Mathew

It was only one song that you sung which
Made me admire the beauty of words.
It was only one flower you offered that
Made me your devotee for life.

It was only one message you sent that
Made me an avid reader.
It was only one olive branch extended for peace that
Made me an advocate of nature.

It was only one smile poured in your lips that
Made me realize that happiness can be freely given.
It was only one word spoken by you that
Made me frame the goal in my life.

It was only one candle that you lit that
Made me contemplate the darkness in my life.
It was only one step you took to my heart which
Made me aware that my journey is with you.

It was only one moment you took for reflection that
Made me ponder over the wisdom of ages.
It was only one prayer you meditated silently that
Made me a disciple of the Almighty.

To think that it took only one thing from you
To make me see so many good things in life.
To make me a human-being, to make me
The kind of person I have only thought in my dreams.
