What if?

a poem by Devapriya Banerjee

Every moment
Every second of the day
A naughty tear threatens to break free
And run down my cheek
And declare to the world
That I am in pain
Suffering, and helpless.

Every moment
Every second of the day
I constantly hold it back
Under the fake twinkle
Rekindled, with effort.

Angered, the same tear has gathered an army
Every moment
Every second of the day
A new unshed drop joins the crew,
Scaring me.
What if I fail to fight them?
And the truth is exposed?
What if they drench my face?
And blur my eyes?
What if they win!

Will that make you happy?
