Shattered

a poem by Suvir Mirchandani

Dreams, hopes,
like so many pieces of broken crystal
shattered by a single stroke of your hand
lie on the street
trampled on by the uncaring feet of those ignorant
that each piece
is a memory of our time together
on my hands and knees
I grope
picking up each small part of our souls
trying to join them back with sticky tears
in the desperate hope
of putting our lives together again
