A train journey and a song

a poem by Jan Oskar Hansen

Up the steep hills of Peru
The pleasing little locomotive
Struggled, pulling two carriages
Of human cargo when it
Ran out of steam and began
Rolling backwards, slowly
At first which gave us time
To get off, except its driver
Who tried to save his train.
Faster and faster it rolled
Till it jumped the tracks and
Fell down a very deep gorge.
In the silence that followed
We could hear the driver’s
Radio play “Yesterday all my
Troubles seem so far away!”
