Diamond

a poem by Jean Walter

I’m awaiting that moment when over,
A million faces smile at me all at once,
When I’ve to run for cover,
To shadow myself from it’s beaming brilliance.

When the celestial glory confines itself within,
That adamantine carbon, turned a scintillating.
stone-
T’is a priceless one called diamond,
At the sight of which I’m dumfound.

When none cared for you, you grew;
Your stately splendour can be matched by few,
Who bear the brunt of pressure and heat-
Yet persevere to be eternally luminescent.

God press this decayed hard lump,
Over the fiery bowels of the earth,so that,
It emits too brilliant a light,
To be displayed by DeBeers at Antwerp.
