What is Spring

a poem by Rita Ison

What is spring a child asked one day
So I explained as we went on our way
It’s the chirping of peep frogs in the air
The familiar singing of robins from everywhere
When chipmunks scurry on a carpet of leaves
The jumping of squirrels from tree to tree
Rabbits nibbling dead grass from a summer past
A fawn drinking from a creek, as waters run fast
When geese fly high toward that northern sky
The loud honking of ducks as they fly by
What is spring, I say, with a twinkle in my eye
It’s when old man winter finally says good-bye
