At the signal

a poem by Jaya Anitha Abraham

In a familiar street
The signals turn red
The windows glow
And you halt near me
There is a dove
On the ledge
The moments of stillness
I recall the warm hearts
The kid’s laughter
The stories and
The muffled voices too
The fireflies floating
Life stands still

Familiarity turns it green
Leaf green, thoughtfully green
The car lunges forward
You move in a trance, guiltless
Like sheep from the pen
All laughable white or black
The tide goes out
Thoughts recoil
Clouds, like horses
Stirs up dust from the
Miserable past, grieving
Shadows too run along
Life moves on
