Raksha Bandhan

a poem by Veena Damodar

How fortunate to be endowed
With a brother like you!
A blessing showered by the Almighty!
An epitome of perseverance and success.
You are a rock
Amidst the rough sea,
An anchor for a sinking ship.
Each thoughtful word
And action speaks volumes.
No words to define your caring,
Affectionate ways.
Each morning taking a step ahead,
May you scale greater heights!
On this day,
A humble prayer for you,
“God Bless my brother with infinite
Peace, Health and Contentment.”

You are my passion

a poem by Veena Damodar

It was a full moon night,
Bright but soothing,
The moon shone down,
In all its glory.
The day was special!
It was that midnight,
When you came into our lives
When everything changed for us!
The moment you were bestowed unto me,
I knew you are to be a passion in my life!
From then my life took a new turn,
It revolved around you.
Your laughter, your cries,
Were so soothing to my ears!
I forgot myself, my spouse, my favourite
Programmes on Television, my reading, my work, my daily chores,
For I was there for you, all the time,
Ready to dance to your tunes!

Now as I ponder, of times gone by, my thoughts fleet back,
To those early years of your childhood,
The games we played, the jokes we enjoyed,
I must say I relished every moment of it!
Not missing any school function of which,
You were always a part, be it sports or music or acting!
The glorious moment was when you were,
On the stage to receive your reward!
You have since been soaring heights.

On the occasion of your birthday, let me tell you,
My life still revolves around you,
You are my passion!

Cordless Connexion

a poem by Veena Damodar

Tring Tring! Tring Tring!
No time to wait and ponder,
I leave aside everything,
For I know it is my
Weekly connexion.
The cordless connexion!
“Mama, it is me.”
Do I have to be told so?
Who else but you my Molu.
What a delight to hear the melodious childlike voice.
The ring of the telephone is my lifeline!

The accumulated news of friends and relatives!
Enquiries, welfare, well being,
A bit of maternal advice,
A matured girl’s views,.all accepted.
Seconds tick away, the voice now a distant bye,
Love, take care!
It keeps me happy and contented for a week,
Till the next tring tring! Wonders of the invention.
It is indeed a cordless connexion!

The connexion between you and me,
Is a special one.
There is no umbilical chord,
But a cordless connexion,
Evolved by the Almighty!

Festivities

a poem by Veena Damodar

It’s festive season, with nature at its best,
Enriched with flora and fauna
That adorn this beautiful earth.
Colourful nature, spreading
Joy and Prosperity.

Can you hear the laughter and the giggle?
The tinkle of the anklets?
The bangles jingle?
It is now and here, that I long
To see my little girl.
She has flown away from the cocoon
To soar high in the sky!
The girls, enthusiastic,
As they adorn the front yard with flowers and ‘Rangoli’.
My little girl spreads her laughter and joy
In another land.
While I with eyes moist,
Bless her and wish her well.

Whirlwind

a poem by Veena Damodar

You came like a whirlwind,
Breezed away,
Leaving behind fond memories of
Mirth, Laughter and Joy.

At no other time of life,
Did I experience such joy of waiting!
Months of anguish wait changed to
Weeks, days and hours.

How delighted we were, seeing you.
Walk down the aisle,
With poise, confidence and radiance
That lit your face.
Then the warm hug!
Electrifying! Deep down to the
Core of my heart.

The house transformed to a home
With chatter and clatter.
Once again days swiftly passed by,
Was it faster than light?

Time to part, tearful goodbye,
To a land of bright future,
Albeit, too far from home.
You, walked towards the aircraft
With hope and confidence.
We, bereft with nothing but
Reminiscences of your stay,
Turn back home.

You came like a whirlwind.
Spreading joy and cheer,
Lifted our souls to high spirits
Promising to return without delay!

In Appreciation

a poem by Veena Damodar

My heart reaches out to you in
Admiration and Pride!
Birds fly out of their nest
To explore the world,
O that I were a bird!

Astronauts move out,
To explore the celestial bodies,
O that I were an astronaut!
Air, Wind, Breeze spread fresh
Aroma to far away lands,
Over the hills and dales,
No boundaries do they encompass
On their journey!
O that I could move with them!

Why do I regret?
I experience the joy of travelling
Over distant lands and seas
Through you, my Child!
I pray, the Almighty,
Give me many more opportunities
To see the world through your eyes!

My heart reaches out to you,
In admiration and pride!

To a loved one

a poem by Veena Damodar

Often I ponder over what I do not have,
I fail to count my blessings,
Then I experience a tug, a pull,
Perhaps the Protector reminding me
I see an aura, an effulgent flow of thoughts
Come rushing.
God, were you not with me all times?
Were you not the one who blessed me?
With doting Ma and Pa,
A loving, sharing sibling,
A caring, protecting life partner
And God, your greatest gift of all,
My little girl.

All this alleviates me to the most exalted state of mind.
I then, said a prayer for you, Molu, today,
I knew God must have heard my prayer.
I asked that He be near you,
At the start of each new day,
To bless you with health and peace of mind,
I also asked for happiness for you.
In all your endeavors in life.

It is not easy to enclose in frame,
My gratitude to God.
For having endowed me with,
A Pillar of strength, in times of stress and strain.
It is not easy to compose a little poem,
On the adoration, love and concern, Molu,
You have showered on us!

Togetherness

a poem by Veena Damodar

Three decades of togetherness have passed by,
It seems like it was just the other day,
When we decided to be man and wife,
United in happy wedlock.

Years have rolled by,
Memories are as fresh as the morning dew,
As fragrant as the fresh air.
You and I understood each other, albeit
There were a few occasions of differences
Which were a passe, like the setting sun?

Our life has been painted in different hues and shades,
But, like the twilight, combined all shades
To an evening that is blissful.

Our togetherness, love, trust and faith,
Are the forces binding us?
In times of trials and anxiety,
You have been a constant support,
Your exuberance and optimism helped us to tide thro’
The vicissitudes we encountered along,
Our journey through life.

God, Almighty, had willed we come together,
Remain as a couple,
Share our joys and sorrows.
We offer our gratitude to God who made it happen.

Wonders of the Creator

a poem by Veena Damodar

My window overlooks a mini wood,
My morning cuppa, I relish,
Watching nature in its hectic mood,
What a sight to see the bees, birds, squirrels rush,
One is spellbound at the brisk activity.
Two tiny birds draw my attention,
I watch them sharing their affection
Whispering sweet nothings!
Swaying along the branches in the warmth of the sun,
Enjoying the occasional pitter-patter too.

Rays of powdered sunlight dawn my room,
I peep out, to see my friends busy putting their hearts and home together,
For their new arrivals!
Flying past my window sill, picking up twigs, cotton,
Weaving a warm home with coir.
Sharpness of the beak entwines the coir, twigs, cotton,
For a cosy comfort for the unborns- four little eggs.

My joy knew no bounds,
When over my cuppa, my eyes fell upon,
The cute chicks, cuddled in the warmth comfort created for them,
Ah, the maternal instincts! Feeding, protecting, nurturing.

Visitors surround the home,
Mama mia! careful as a watchdog,
Overtly concerned of her fledgelings, acts as a sheet anchor!
I stood astounded at the marvels of motherhood!

Days pass by, the little fledgelings,
Spread their wings to take their first flight,
Hesitant, but confident,
Slowly and steadily they fly out of sight.
A complete cycle I visualize,
Amazing are the ways of the CREATOR!
