Diamonds are Forever

a poem by Santhosh M P

Diamonds are forever
All the sparkle and glitter
A chest full of wealthy treasure
The gleam of gold and silver
Can never match the power
Of all the sparkle and glitter

Because diamonds are forever

You’ll be surprised to hear
About an old man named Pierre
All day he begged at the corner
At nights he liked to wander

Once he tripped upon a stone
His eyes dazzled and shone
He washed it by the sea
And held it up to see

He could hear his heart quiver
And his hands tremble and shiver
He held a costly diamond
He hardly believed that moment
Very soon he had an idea
Building inside him like hysteria
His eyes glinted in mischief
Eternal relief from all the grief

He ran across the lonely shore
He knew he needed no more
But to hurl the stone into the sky
And see the sparkling flashes fly

He threw the stone so high
That it flitted across the sky
A trillion sparkles of light
Flashing and flaming through the night

His heart was light and free
He stared into the deep blue sea

He had flung a costly treasure
For just a moment of pleasure

You can still find him at the corner
No money, No food, no honour
Just a memory of that night
Flashing streaks of light
A diamond skimming through the sky
His spirits start soaring so high

You might call him inane
Or for that matter even insane
But for him it was important
That everlasting, eternal moment

Diamonds are forever
All the sparkle and glitter
A chest full of wealthy treasure
The gleam of gold and silver
Can never match the power
Of all the sparkle and glitter

Because diamonds are forever…
