Of Roads, Toads, This and That

a poem by Gayathri

You struggle on with wool over your eyes
Look around you and feel self-satisfied.
Listen to the same people and conversations
Mouth the right words and meet all expectations.

Where does it end, This Conformity?

Sheep driven along city roads
Hoping for princes and kissing the toads
Going from cradle to grave
With never a taste of the excitement you crave

Where does it go, This Journey?

Take me away from it
Far Away.
Where I can be myself
And not just another
Maid on the shelf,
To be taken down and dusted off
Prettied up and married off
